Does authentic Chinese food have MSG?
Chinese food and soups contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) as the main addictive ingredient. A sensitive individual may suffer from headache, giddiness, sweating, abdominal pain, and urticaria within a few hours of consumption of MSG.
The first thing is: most Chinese food don't use MSG. Chinese knew how to cook food far before human discovered the concept of MSG (and by the way MSG was not discovered and first used by Chinese people). With or without MSG, they taste the same.
MSG provides more flavor, with less sodium.
Also, MSG amplifies and enhances the flavor of foods – whether it is naturally occurring or added to foods. The glutamate interacts with our taste buds, giving foods the umami, or savory, flavor.
Why should you go for it? Quite simply, because seasoning many foods with MSG makes them taste better! MSG is a purified form of glutamate, the amino acid responsible for umami (savory) flavor. By using it to increase the savoriness of a dish, the dish will taste richer and meatier.
An excessive consumption of MSG can cause a "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" and gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers. Therefore, the maximum dose of MSG should be reconsidered taking into account its influence on the secretory capacity of the stomach.
Chick-Fil-A's grilled chicken has the additive “Yeast Extract”, which contains free glutamic acid, the main component of MSG. This is hidden MSG, disguised by another name. This ingredient is purely used to make you crave their food and eat more than you should.
Beside its flavour enhancing effects, MSG has been associated with various forms of toxicity (Figure 1(Fig. 1)). MSG has been linked with obesity, metabolic disorders, Chinese Restaurant Syndrome, neurotoxic effects and detrimental effects on the reproductive organs.
It also has an equally familiar-sounding ingredient: monosodium glutamate, or MSG. McDonald's doesn't currently use MSG in the other items that compose its regular, nationally available menu—but both Chick-fil-A and Popeyes list it as an ingredient in their own chicken sandwiches and chicken filets.
Processed meats: pepperoni, bacon, pastrami, sausages, salami. Sauces and dressings: soy sauce, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, salad dressings. Premade and packaged foods: canned soups, canned tuna, frozen meals, crackers, potato chips, flavored snacks. Condiments: seasoning blends, rubs.
MSG has been shown to cause lesions on the brain especially in children. These lesions cause cognitive, endocrinological and emotional abnormalities. In children, excess glutamate affects the growth cones on neurons.
Does lo mein have MSG?
Mix together MSG, sugar, and soy sauce.
MSG is a kind of salt, a salt of the amino acid called glutamic acid. Glutamate imparts a unique taste to foods. Japanese professor Kikunae Ikeda, who discovered MSG, described it as umami, or the fifth taste after sweet, salty, sour and bitter. This taste is also often described as savoury, or xian wei in Chinese.
Here's the good news: MSG contains two-thirds less the amount of sodium compared to table salt, so if you're looking to lower your sodium intake, reaching for MSG to flavor your food can help you eat less sodium.
After eating meals prepared with MSG, people with MSG sensitivity may have migraine headache, visual disturbance, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tightness of the chest, skin rash, or sensitivity to light, noise, or smells.
MSG enhances the flavour of salty, savoury foods and is lower in sodium than salt – it contains only a third of the amount of sodium you would find in salt. Researchers have recently found that including MSG in food may even help reduce excessive salt intake, which can contribute to cardiovascular disease.
People think MSG is linked to the symptoms previously listed. But this hasn't been proven. You may be sensitive to MSG if you become ill after eating foods that contain it. It's also possible to be sensitive to foods that naturally contain high amounts of glutamate.
How can I tell if a food has MSG in it? Food manufacturers must declare when MSG is added, either by name or by its food additive code number 621, in the ingredient list on the label of most packaged foods. For example, MSG could be identified as: 'Flavour enhancer (MSG)', or.
Results: MSG intake was associated with a significant increase in SBP and DBP. A strong sex interaction was observed in relation to SBP change. Women with high MSG intake were more likely to have increased SBP and DBP. Total glutamate intake was also positively associated with an increase in SBP.
Our food recipes do not use added MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and, based on information from our suppliers, MSG is not added to any of the ingredients we use. However, certain foods and ingredients naturally contain glutamate or glutamic acid (such as tomatoes, milk, cheese, mushrooms and certain yeasts and proteins).
While Wendy's chicken has always been MSG free, Wendy's also removed artificial flavors, preservatives and colors from artificial sources. Wendy's created one of the industry's first Animal Welfare Advisory Councils in 2001 to review and strengthen animal care standards by suppliers.
Does Pizza Hut use MSG?
In 2015, Pizza Hut became the first national pizza restaurant to remove artificial flavors and colors from its core pizzas. On top of that, Pizza Hut has already eliminated partially hydrogenated oils (also known as artificial trans fats) and MSG.

MSG-induced symptoms are typically not severe and subside on their own entirely within 72 hours. 1 However, if you have mild symptoms do not appear to resolve or continue worsening after 48 hours, speak to your healthcare provider, as it may be something more serious.
A common criticism of MSG is that it's associated with higher rates of obesity. MSG has not been shown to affect fat cells, leptin receptors or other parts of the body associated with weight gain, but some research still shows that higher MSG intake is related to a higher body mass index (BMI) over time.
MSG is not used in any of the Taco Bell products we sell.
