How many rods are you allowed to fish with in NY?
Andrew Cuomo that allows anglers to have three rods, instead of two, in any body of freshwater in New York. Being able to use an additional pole will increase a fisherman's chances of catching a fish.
You always want to bring at least two rod and reel setups when you go fishing. If you have just one, something could happen to your rod or reel, your line could get tangled, or you could get spooled by a big fish. If any of those things happen (and they're not uncommon!), that's probably the end of your trip.
You also can use multiple rods to have multiple baits in the water at a time which gives you more opportunities to catch fish faster. In the United States, it is legal to use two fishing rods at a time in all states except Tennessee, Minnesota, and Georgie. Some bodies of water may have restrictions of their own.
Under the new regulations, hand lines and tip-ups are both defined as "fishing lines" and anglers are only allowed to use no more than seven at a time. Thus, an angler is using tip-ups only, he or she can have up to 7 actively working at any one time.
Ice-Fishing Line Regulations
No person shall operate an ice fishing line that has more than 5 lures or baits in total or has more than 15 hook points in total. The operator must be in immediate attendance when ice-fishing lines are in the water.
Possession of hooks with a gap greater than a half inch are prohibited. The use of lures on these waters with treble hooks, with certain exceptions, are also banned. ** For more specifics on fishing regulations, see the DEC fishing guide or check out the DEC website.
Many Rods Allows Instantaneous Change of Presentation
Hooking into fish is often times about being ready when the opportunity arises. Many serious bass anglers will have at least 3 rods on standby to fish most scenarios that could arise. They have a medium action bait caster to pitch plastics deep near cover.
The average subscriber to Bass Angler Magazine has about 26 fishing rods. Pennsylvania angler, Joe Stefanacci, estimates he has over 40. Nebraska angler Jared Schleifer only has 7 that he considers “active.” You could play a round of golf with just a 4-iron.
A 7-foot rod is good for distance and for casting larger baits. A 6- to 6 1/2-foot rod is more accurate, so you have to adjust the rod length to the type of fishing you do. Crankbait and topwater rods should be made of fiberglass, which allows the fish time to inhale the bait before you set the hook.
