How long does slack tide last?
The slack portion of the tide, high or low, only lasts for about 20 to 30 minutes.
This moment of no current is called slack tide or slack current. You can have a high slack when the tide reaches its maximum height or a low slack when the tide reaches its lowest height. Therefore, you can expect to see two high slacks and two low slacks in a 24-hour period in most places.
Slack water is a short period in a body of tidal water when the water is completely unstressed, and there is no movement either way in the tidal stream, and which occurs before the direction of the tidal stream reverses.
During the period of Spring tides following Low Water there is a pronounced rise in tides; and two hours after Low Water the stream slackens off quite considerably for a further two hours before the final accelerated rise to High Water, which takes a further three hours.
Slack tides are not the best time for fishing, in fact, they are often the worst times. Bait is not being flushed into or out of the estuary system, so baitfish and other prey are not in predictable areas.
An incoming tide, or rising tide, is considered one of the best fishing tide times. Water that enters an estuary area from the ocean can have a lower temperature, contain more oxygen, and have better clarity than the water that exists in the estuary during low tide or slack water periods.
If making a shore dive, the best time to dive is during high-water “slack,” a period of approximately one hour around the turning of the tide when there is minimal water movement. Diving at high-water slack means that the water may be approximately 4 to 6 feet (2 to 3 m) deeper than at low-water slack.
An ebb tide refers to the time that the sea level falls over the course of several hours. Slack tide or slack water is the point where the water turns. Flood tide refers to the period between slack and high tide. Tidal times vary due to local geography.
What tide conditions are best for you? For swimmers, the water is safest during a slack tide, during which the water moves very little. A slack tide happens in the hour preceding or following a high or low tide. Swimmers will also enjoy waves with shorter intervals, which are calmer and less dangerous.

The key theoretical timings in a semi-diurnal tidal cycle – the most common around Britain – are six hours 12½ minutes from high to low, 12 hours 25 minutes from high to high and 24 hours 50 minutes for a full cycle.
Typically, the best times to fish are when the tide is “running” — that is, when it's on the move from high to low or vice versa. Once the water approaches the extremes of high or low tide, it slows down and stops moving, becoming what's known as “slack,” and the fish are less likely to bite.
Slack water (the time around high or low tide) is the best time to crab. During slack water, crabs are generally walking around and foraging since they are not getting pushed around by tidal exchange.
Fish generally prefer early morning and evening sun to the bright midday rays. In midday, the surface temperature of the water is also hotter, forcing the fish to move deeper.

Should you swim at high tide or low tide?

This means that at high tide, when the water covers the steep beach, you are quickly out of your depth. For experienced swimmers this isn't a problem, but for those less confident or people with young kids, it is safer to swim at low tide when the water stays shallower.
Small children and the elderly might consider not going in the water during high tide. In addition, it is not necessary to go out more than four or five feet into the water during high tide and it is not advised for anyone to ever swim out past the breakers.
Some, as a rule of thumb, define the viz as the vertical visibility (the depth where you can no longer see the surface) minus 3 m / 10 ft. Probably a good guideline, but useless in most of the tropics, where the viz always exceeds the dive depth. Try to use anything you have to your advantage.
